Post Utilite Value won't boot; just black screen
Hi, all. I have an old Utilite Value that I bought a few years ago and never quite got working as well as I'd have liked. I just pulled it out of the closet and decided to try to install Arch Linux on it after booting it up. I got a second SD card and tried to follow these instructions, but after swapping out the original SD card I had with the one that had been booting, the device has only booted once successfully since, and then with the original SD card. The rest of the time, I'm getting video output with a black screen. That one time it did boot, as soon as I plugged in the USB dongle for my wireless keyboard/trackpad combo, the black screen happened. I have tried with no USB devices attached, a different keyboard, and a different monitor.

Any ideas on how to get it to boot up? I unfortunately don't have another machine with a serial port.

I can't really help as I'm not familiar with Arch and kinda did my own thing but I very highly recommend getting a USB to serial adapter. They're very cheap and very useful.

Just hook it up, use picocom on the host to connect, and see what you can see.

First, I powered down the Utilite so the LED in the front showed amber, inserted the SD card that I had been using originally, and removed the USB Wi-Fi and wireless keyboard/trackpad dongles. Then, I connected the null modem to the Utilite via the included ultra-mini to DE9 adapter and to my laptop via the USB-to-serial adapter, then powered up the Utilite using the button in the front. I got the following, though the relevant portions seems to be at the end. I have no idea what the root password is.

I put the SD card into a USB adapter and ran e2fsck. I have very little idea what any of it meant, but I mashed yes.

Post Re: Utilite Value won't boot; just black screen
So I followed these instructions from CompuLab to install Utilite Linux to the SSD card to which I'd tried to install Arch, and the TTY output wasn't awful, so I started it up again without the serial cable connected. I got a Lightweight Desktop Environment screen on the attached monitor (a TV via an HDMI cable, if that matters). As soon as I inserted the USB dongle for the keyboard/trackpad combo, the screen went black, and now restarting doesn't help, though the TTY output if I attach the serial cable before restarting is similar.

Ideas?

Okay, information overload! :shock:

Your last attempt looks the most promising. I have seen this error myself quite recently on another ARM box that is effectively locked into an older kernel. Basically recent versions of udev/systemd (IIRC) require newer kernels, probably at least 3.2.

This Arch rootfs image appears to be generated regularly and yet it is pinned back to an ancient kernel. I'm not sure whether it is provided in a broken state or you ran package updates that caused it to break.

It's strange because just about everything works on the latest vanilla kernel now, except for Bluetooth (and wifi?) as this needs a tiny patch. Given that this image appears to be for the old kernel, it may also have the old Freescale/NXP proprietary graphics drivers rather than the new open ones.

I would speak to whoever is responsible for this image as it doesn't seem that useful right now. I believe there are other Arch users running recent kernels in this forum who you could speak to.
