 LCD Panels for CM-i686

CompuLab provides the following means for evaluating and adapting LCD panels:

  • Ready for use panel, including cable and s/w setup. Panel: PrimeView PD064VT4 (or compatible), 640 x 480, TFT color, 6.4". Compatible with most of modules and baseboards.
  • The list of verified panels, including ready for use setups for some of them.
  • Generic driver and configuration utilities enabling adaptation of a new panels.
  • Verification and adaptation service performed by CompuLab. Provided for purchasers of Evaluation Kit.

Generic Driver and Configuration Utility

The generic driver enables application programs to access the specified LCD panel as a standard display. CompuLab provides configuration utility for driver's setup. The configuration utilities are available for download from  [developer] >> [CM-XXX] >> [Panel Configuration Utility].

Panel Compatibility Verification

CompuLab provides a service for verification of specific panel's compatibility to the CORE's graphics controller. The service works as follows:

  1. The user selects a panel which meets his requirements.
  2. The panel's datasheet is emailed to CompuLab.
  3. We compare the panel's datasheet with the graphics controller specifications and reply with compatibility comments.

The verification service is limited to 3 panels.

Adaptation Service by CompuLab

CompuLab offers a service of LCD panel adaptation: CompuLab configures the generic driver to support a particular LCD panel, whose compatibility was previously verified. For purchasers of Evaluation Kit this service is provided free of charge for one panel.

Configuration setups for most popular panels is built in CM-i686's BIOS and can be selected from BIOS menus without a need of above-mentioned adaptation process.

Guidelines for LCD panel Selection

CM-i686's graphics controller is an integral part of Geode CPU. It is compatible with most TFT panels available in the market. However, it doesn't support STN panels. Final selection of the panel should be confirmed by CompuLab. Selection guidelines:

Panel Type / Interface  TFT (digital RGB), or CRT (analog RGB)
Resolution Fixed 320x240, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768
Bits per pixel (max) Up to 16

Compatibility Limitations

  1. CM-i686's Graphics controller doesn't support STN panels.
The only way to overcome this limitation is to use STN panels with built-in controller. In this case CM-i686's graphics controller is disabled. This implementation requires operating system with "frame buffer" support, such as available in Linux or Win CE.
  2. The support of 320 x 240 resolution is limited to TFT panels which can operate with pixel clock of 10 MHz and above. While specifications of certain panels limit pixel clock to less than 10 MHz, in practice the panels can operate at any arbitrary clock rate.
  3. Standard driver supports only fixed resolutions, which are VGA derivatives: 320 x 240, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768. These are the only resolutions covered by CompuLab's adaptation service for CM-i686. Support of other non-standard resolutions is possible, but requires significant user's effort.
